ABOUT MYSELF AND THE LESSONS
Hi, I'm a professional Guitarist and have been playing for over a 25 years. Gained my Grade 8 at the age of 17, studied A levels at Boston and Lincoln College, and went onto to Leeds College of Music. I've professionally performed all over the UK. At the moment I'm currently running my own Jazz trio, as well as a more modern orientated band (see links below) I teach from the absolute beginner level to advanced, from grade 1 – 8. I've taught GCSE and A level students in conjunction with school studies. Recent past students have gone on to study music at both Nottingham Trent and Grimsby University.
Whatever your level, you will find that my relaxed and fun lessons will help you achieve whatever your goals may be!
ABOUT LESSONS
The lessons branch into two main directions from the beginning, depending on the students preferences.
The question being; do you want to either a) start the traditional grading (either ABRSM or the more modern Rockschool grades) or b) do you want to get a solid foundation in playing while heading in a different direction to what either ABRSM or Rockschool prescribe?
You may just want to see where you even end up! After 4 months you may want to start tackling the south American music of Baden Powell - who knows!
Neither a or b are wrong or right...
If the grading system route is more what your after, great! It's fairly straightforward. I'll show you the books you'll need, and we will work through the material. The books are great, and you will have an immediate goal and time frame that'll culminate in a qualification.
If b is more suited to you, and you want a more open ended route, each lesson I provide is typically divided in two, with the first half emphasis on Classical pieces, and the other being Pop/Folk/Country/Blues/Jazz songs in the Chord Melody Style. Chord Melody is the ability to play the chords and melody of a song simultaneously, which is sadly a forgotten style. Chord Melody is both fingers and plectrum based. A good way to view Chord/Melody is a lot like how you would hear a pianist perform, with the chords in the left hand and melody in the right hand. The classical aspect of the lessons give a solid foundation to any guitarist, and the Chord Melody pieces not only lets you play the tune without accompaniment, but opens a gateway to understanding harmony in relation to melody.
However, if your looking to learn something specific, that's never a problem. If we can't jump straight into the given style/song/artist you would like to, we can make a clear and concise study plan as to how you will get there!
I also offer A level and GCSE catch up lessons
